Morning Lancaster.
I sat down to write this article, looked it over as I usually do.
And I couldn’t help but laugh - because I accidentally made it (almost) all Elizabethtown.

There’s too much happening!
Welcome to the “Elizabethtown” takeover of the Lancaster Local.
(Sorry? Or not?)
Anyways … here’s what I think is worth your time today.
Local Highlight: A Whimsical Bookstore In Downtown Elizabethtown

Photo taken by me 🙂
Tucked into a bright corner storefront in downtown Elizabethtown, Bookshelf Shenanigans is the kind of place that makes you slow down - on purpose.
With its cheerful yellow brick exterior and ever-changing window displays (currently dressed up in Valentine’s charm), the independent bookstore feels less like a retail stop and more like an invitation. Step inside, and you’ll find a thoughtfully curated mix of new and gently used books, cozy nooks, and shelves that reflect care rather than algorithms.
Bookshelf Shenanigans has quickly become a gathering place for readers of all kinds.
The selection spans fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, and gift-worthy finds - alongside titles by local authors and small presses you’re unlikely to spot in big-box stores. It’s the kind of shop where a conversation with the bookseller might lead you to your next favorite read.
Beyond the books, the store leans into the community. From seasonal décor to author events and book clubs, Bookshelf Shenanigans is helping anchor a broader revival of downtown Elizabethtown - one built on personality, creativity, and local connection.
Find it at 2 N Market St, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.

A Schoolhouse Reborn: The Great Depression Era History Behind Donegal Animal Hospital

If you’ve ever taken your pet to Donegal Animal Hospital, you may not realize you’re stepping into a building with nearly a century of local history behind its walls.
The structure was originally Washington School, erected in 1933 by the School District of East Donegal Township.
Built during the Great Depression, the school represented a major community investment at a time when resources were scarce but public education was considered essential to the township’s future.
A dedication plaque preserved inside the building records the names of the school board members who oversaw its construction—D. M. Wolgemuth, Dr. E. K. Tingley, D. C. Witmer, J. H. Hoffman, and I. H. Neiman—local leaders who helped guide education in East Donegal during a pivotal era.
The building was constructed by Diller Plank, with architectural design by Henry Y. Shaub, a prominent Lancaster County architect whose work shaped many civic and institutional buildings throughout the region.
The school’s solid masonry, symmetrical design, and restrained classical detailing reflected the practical yet dignified style common to public buildings of the 1930s.
For decades, Washington School served generations of East Donegal children—its classrooms filled with lessons, chalkboards, and the everyday rhythms of township life. As school needs changed and consolidation became common across Lancaster County, the building eventually outlived its original educational purpose.
Rather than being lost to time, the former school found new life as a veterinary practice, becoming what is now Donegal Animal Hospital. Today, where students once learned their ABCs, veterinarians and staff provide care for pets across Mount Joy and the surrounding communities.
However, while it’s a great service to all of us northern Lancaster County residents, not all of our furry citizens are as appreciative …
Sorry Skronk ☹

Chocolate, Community, and a Little Magic in Downtown Elizabethtown

Photo from LIV Etown’s Facebook page
Downtown Elizabethtown is getting a sweet dose of fun this week as 2nd Fridays returns with one of its most popular winter traditions—the Mars Wrigley Chocolate Walk, presented by LIV-ETown.
Taking place Friday the 13th from 4–7 p.m., the Chocolate Walk invites visitors to stroll through downtown, stopping at participating businesses to sample chocolate treats while enjoying the lively, walkable atmosphere that has become a hallmark of Etown’s monthly celebration.
Adding an extra layer of delight this month is Papa Tater Magic, who will be performing live at The Marriage Hub. Known for his warm, family-friendly style, Papa Tater brings interactive magic, surprises, and laughs—perfect for kids, parents, and anyone who enjoys a little wonder mixed into their evening.
2nd Fridays events like this are part of a larger effort to energize downtown Elizabethtown, encouraging residents and visitors alike to support local shops, restaurants, and community spaces.
With chocolate in hand and magic around the corner, it’s an easy excuse to slow down, explore, and reconnect with neighbors.
Whether you’re coming for the sweets, the show, or just the joy of being out on a winter evening, this Friday’s Chocolate Walk offers a reminder of what makes Lancaster County’s small towns special—creativity, collaboration, and a strong sense of place.
2nd Fridays events are free to attend. Chocolate Walk participation and offerings may vary by business.
Note From Andrew
I certainly didn’t intend to make this an “Elizabethtown” heavy edition of the Lancaster Local - it just so happened to turn out that way.
I suppose there’s so much to talk about regarding my little town.
Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m sitting here in Folklore in the Etown square writing this.
For those curious - I’m sipping their “Sweetness in the mess” Valentine’s day drink.
It’s everything you could want in a great cup of coffee.

Sweetness.
Savory caramel.
Cinnamon sugar.
I consistently find that Folklore’s unique specials become my favorites.
If you’re ever in Etown, stop in and see what they dreamed up.
Anyways,
Tomorrow we’ll cover more about what’s happening around the county (outside of Etown).
So many good things going on!
Now that we’re in mid-February I’m hoping we warm up and enjoy more of our county.

That’s todays updates,
