COMMUNITY NEWS
A downtown church's pipe organ turns 100, and Sunday is its birthday concert.
Covenant United Methodist Church, at 110 North Mulberry Street in Lancaster city, is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its Casavant pipe organ.
The church building was built in 1926. "At the same time we completed this building," the church says, "the Casavant Organ Company of Canada completed building and installing our beautiful pipe organ."
For the past year, technicians from Brunner & Associates have been repairing and partially restoring the organ in time for its anniversary.
They took pipes and parts to their shop in Silver Spring to work on them, then returned them to the organ in prime condition.
The organ stayed usable the whole time, just not all of its stops and sounds.
The church says Brunner & Associates are confident that on Sunday the organ "will sound exactly like it did in 1926."
The church has raised $72,171 toward its $100,000 goal for the work, as of September 25.
The celebration is Sunday, October 25, at 3:00 p.m.: a recital and hymn sing with concert organist Gordon Turk, the resident organist at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, who has played Carnegie Hall and the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.
A reception follows at 4:45 p.m. The church says the celebration will include some descendants of the Straub and Eckert families, who donated the organ, along with family and friends of its past organists.
The concert is free, with a free-will offering.
The church asks everyone to register for a free ticket so it can prepare for the reception.
For $25, a 5:30 p.m. add-on session lets you explore the organ with Turk.
