You've probably walked past it a hundred times. The market is older than the country.
If you've lived here a while, it's easy to forget that the market beside Penn Square isn't just a market. By its own reckoning, Lancaster Central Market is "America's Oldest Continuously Operated Public Market," with a tradition that dates to 1730 — nearly half a century before there was a United States.
It didn't always look like it does now. In the early days, vendors sold from wagons and the open air; the landmark brick market house you know today opened in 1889. Nearly three centuries on, it's still going: local produce, farm meats and cheeses, cut flowers, baked goods, and home-cooked meals from the county's growers and makers — more than 65 standholders under one roof.
It's open every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you've been meaning to make a morning of it, this is a good week — pair Central Market with Root's on Tuesday (below) and you'll have toured two of Lancaster County's great market traditions in the space of a few days.

Friday, July 31, 5:30 p.m. A family-friendly Summer Evening Getaway with the Americana duo Hopeless Semantics — classic rock, country, blues, folk, and bluegrass, with vocal harmonies and audience requests. 🎺 Taps & Tunes: Big Boy Brass Band — Kissel Valley Farm, 645 E Oregon Rd, Lititz, PA 17543. Sunday, August 2, 12:30–5:30 p.m. An afternoon of big, brassy party music on the farm, with pours from Waltz Vineyards and Rooster Street Brewing and food from local vendors. $10 at the door; $50 season pass. ☕ "Coffee with a Colonial" with Samuel Leamer — Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Rd, Lancaster, PA 17602. 🎶 Music in the Park: Mitch and The Moodswings — Fuhrman Park, 190 Rock Point Rd, Marietta, PA 17547. Sunday, August 2, 6:00 p.m. East Donegal Township's free summer concert series closes the weekend with Mitch and The Moodswings playing '60s and '70s soul, Motown, and rock & roll. 🎷 Music at Highland: Lancaster British Brass Band — Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E Roseville Rd, Lancaster, PA 17601. Thursday, August 6, 7:00–8:30 p.m. A 31-piece British-style brass band — with players from across the mid-Atlantic — caps the week with a summer concert in the church sanctuary. No admission charge is listed.
