COMMUNITY NEWS

Thanks to the library's Friends, Adamstown has a new patio. The ribbon cutting is this morning.

The Adamstown Area Library, at 110 West Main Street in Adamstown, has a new back patio.

The official ribbon cutting is this morning, Tuesday, October 20, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

The patio was made possible by a donation from the Friends of the Adamstown Area Library, with support from the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. "Come see the finished space and help us celebrate!" the library says.

It's also Friends of the Library Week, October 19 through 23.

The library is marking it with treats including grilled cheese and tomato soup, cookies and tea, pancakes, smoothies, and fresh salsa with chips.

The library calendar has the daily details and timing.

The Friends group was founded in 1990 by the Adamstown Woman's Club to raise money for the library.

It says it donated $864,317 to the library between 1996 and 2022, and its main fundraisers are its annual book sale, basket bingo, and the annual Bucks for Books dinner and auction.

In 2016, it gave $100,000 to kick-start the capital campaign for the new library.

According to the Library System of Lancaster County, the library was founded in the mid-1940s by the Adamstown Woman's Club, with about 100 books, and was first housed in a chicken coop.

If you stop by today, the Friends' used-book sale runs from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the community room.

The library is open until 7:00 p.m. Its number is (717) 484-4200.
