Good morning, Lancaster County. The brutal heat finally broke — today's a comparatively merciful 86, though you'll want an umbrella for the on-and-off thunderstorms. Hope your Fourth was a good one; this week we tip our cap to Lititz's 209th straight Independence Day, then look ahead to a full slate of summer music.
In today's Lancaster Local:
Where to hear live music this week — wineries, a jazz patio, and Three Dog Night at the AMT
Stargazing in Mountville, alpaca-to-yarn in Manheim, and live wildlife in New Holland
The heat wave breaks — cooler and a whole lot wetter all week
COMMUNITY NEWS
The storm got the night. It didn't get the summer.
Saturday's severe storms — strong enough to spin up a tornado in the county and knock out power to tens of thousands — cost Lancaster County at least two of its fireworks shows.
The Ephrata Community Fireworks were called off as the forecast turned, and organizers at the Ephrata Recreation Center said even a Sunday rain date wouldn't work: a fireworks crew needs real lead time, not overnight. "We look forward to celebrating with you very soon," the Rec posted, already back at the table with its vendor to line up a new weekend.
East Petersburg's Movie in the Park got knocked out by weather too, back on June 26 — and that borough's events committee already has its answer locked in. The fireworks, along with Music in the Park, are potentially moving to SummerFest, Friday, July 10, at Pine Street Community Park, alongside food trucks, live music, and two local nonprofits the event supports.
Two townships, same response: reschedule, don't retreat. The county isn't skipping its
fireworks this summer — it's just getting there a little later than planned.

Weather
Monday, July 6 — Sweet relief from the heat: after days near and above 100, today tops out around 86. The trade-off is a wet one — showers and thunderstorms are likely on and off through the day, so keep the umbrella handy and have a backup plan for anything outdoors.
