Good morning, Lancaster County. Some of the best things around here don't make the national news — they happen in a field, under a white tent, the way they have for a hundred years. Today we've got two of those only-here traditions to tell you about, plus a week of free concerts, a bubble show, some drumming for the kids, and a princess train.
In today's Lancaster Local:
Buggies, sleighs, and mini horses cross the auction block — to keep a 100-year-old fire company running
A whole field of steam engines and antique tractors out in Kinzers
Free summer concerts, winery music, and a couple of great picks for the kids
A warm, stormy stretch that's worth planning around
COMMUNITY NEWS
Where else does a hand-stitched quilt sell right next to a horse-drawn sleigh — with every dollar going to the local fire trucks?
Out on the farmland around Bird-in-Hand late last month, they set up the big white tents again for the Lancaster County Carriage & Antique Auction — one of those events you really only find here. Over two days, bidders worked their way through the things that make up Plain-country life: horse-drawn carriages and coaches, buggies, sleighs and wagons, miniature horses and ponies, hand-stitched quilts, plus antiques, tools, and all manner of horse gear.
Here's the part that makes it more than a spectacle. Every bit of it — the auction proceeds, right down to the concession-stand profits — goes to the Hand-in-Hand Fire Company, the all-volunteer crew that has protected Bird-in-Hand and the countryside around it for more than 100 years. It's the rare place in America where a working buggy and a quilt someone's grandmother stitched go up for bid side by side, all to keep the local fire trucks rolling.
If you've never wandered the tents, keep an eye out next June — it's a Lancaster County summer at its most itself.
Also around town:
🚜 A field full of steam: Same weekend, out in Kinzers, the Rough and Tumble Engineers Historical Association held its annual Ag Days — a heritage weekend of chugging steam traction engines and antique tractors on the association's grounds off Route 30. If you've ever wanted to see how the county farmed a century ago, up close and very loud, this is the crowd that keeps it running. Learn more →
