Happy Monday, Lancaster.
Today you can get a free health screening at the public library, test your knowledge over BBQ and brews in Bird-in-Hand, catch live acoustic music from Philly's best singer-songwriters, or spend the evening watching classic sci-fi and talking philosophy over Lancaster Distilleries drinks.
And tomorrow, Millersville hosts one of the region's biggest teacher job fairs.
Here’s what I think is worth your time today.
Free Health Screenings At The Lancaster Public Library This Morning
You don't need a doctor's appointment or insurance to get a basic health checkup - just stop by the library this morning.
Lancaster Public Library is partnering with Penn State Health to offer free health screenings today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main lobby or reading room.
A team of nurses will be on hand to provide cholesterol screenings, blood pressure checks, and referrals to social services for anyone who needs them. No appointment necessary - walk-ins are welcome, and the event is open to all ages.
It's a simple idea that makes a real difference.
Not everyone has easy access to routine health monitoring, and catching something like high blood pressure or high cholesterol early can change the course of someone's health.
The library is meeting people where they are.
If you can't make it today, future dates include April 13, May 11, June 8, and beyond.
Lancaster Public Library is located at 125 N. Duke St. in Lancaster City. Questions? Contact the Adult Services Department at (717) 394-2651 or [email protected].
Zoetropolis Kicks Off Golden Age Sci-Fi Crash Course This Evening
If you've ever wondered what 1950s science fiction was really saying beneath all the rockets and robots, Zoetropolis Cinema has the event for you.
Tonight at 6:30 p.m., Zoetropolis launches a four-week "Crash Course: The Golden Age of Science Fiction" as part of their popular Philosophy | Drink | Film series.
York College Professor of Philosophy Dennis Weiss will introduce the screening and guide discussion around the questions those classic films were really wrestling with - can reason save us from ourselves? What happens when technology escapes our control?
How do fear and conformity reshape who we are?
The PDF series has become a Lancaster staple for good reason.
Each event pairs thought-provoking cinema with lively post-screening conversation, drinks from the full bar featuring Lancaster Distilleries, and food from Zoetropolis' restaurant delivered right to your seat in the cinema.
It's a full night out with some intellectual weight to it.
The crash course runs every Monday in March.
Dates available are the 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th. Each screening is at 6:30 p.m. with a runtime of about three hours.
Tickets for the March 9 screening are available now at zoetropolis.com.
Zoetropolis Cinema is located at 112 N. Water St. in Lancaster City.
Millersville Hosts Regional Teacher Job Fair Tuesday
If you're a newly certified teacher looking for a job - or a school district looking for talent - Tuesday is a big day at Millersville University.
Teacher Recruitment Day (TRD) takes place Tuesday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Memorial Center's Ville Courts on campus.
The day runs in two phases. From 9 a.m. to noon, it's an open job fair - candidates can walk from table to table, meet with district recruiters, and talk about openings. From noon to 3 p.m., districts invite selected candidates back for more focused conversations or informal interviews.
No pre-registration is required to attend. You do need to bring a copy of your resume to get in.
Eligibility is limited to alumni, current student teachers, and students graduating in Spring or Summer 2026.
Candidates from the six consortium schools get in free; candidates from other schools pay a $20 cash admission fee.
For Lancaster County's education community, TRD is one of the most practical events of the year - a direct pipeline connecting local graduates with the schools that need them.
Millersville University is located at 1 S. George St. in Millersville. More info at millersville.edu/careercenter.
Philly's Music Scene Comes to Lancaster Tonight
West Art Lancaster is bringing a little bit of Philadelphia tonight with the monthly return of Philly Unplugged - a live acoustic showcase spotlighting some of the best singer-songwriters the City of Brotherly Love has to offer.
Presented by Paul Bunyan, Philly Unplugged runs from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Art Bar at West Art (816 Buchanan Ave). The concept is simple and great: a rotating cast of Philly-based acoustic performers gets to connect with a Lancaster audience, and Lancaster gets a taste of a music scene that's really only an hour down the road.
This month's lineup features three acts — Soph Solomon, Wakeful State, and Chris ii. The show is free to attend (it's a club event at West Art), so there's really no reason not to check it out.
Philly Unplugged returns monthly, with upcoming dates on April 13, May 11, June 8, and beyond. If you've been meaning to spend more time at West Art, Monday night is a good place to start.
