COMMUNITY NEWS

Thirteen artist studios on Ewell Plaza.

Lancaster city has a new creative space: Makers, at 171 North Queen Street on the north side of Ewell Plaza.

Its centerpiece will be 13 artist studios, which it says will be available by mid-October.

It will also have a gallery displaying works by its member artists.

Makers is managed by Jason and Katherine Horst of Horst Arts, whose arts center is at 17 North Main Street in Manheim.

Katherine is a fine artist and a PCAD graduate.

Jason is a designer whose clients have included Coca-Cola and HGTV.

This weekend, Makers is part of Lancaster City's free Fall Art Walk: Saturday, October 17, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, October 18, noon to 4:00 p.m.

Jason will show his series of landmark Lancaster buildings depicted as "dystopian yet playful creatures," along with wood pieces that include wall hangings depicting the tree-lighting ceremonies of nearby towns.

All weekend, visitors can help build a communal collage mural.

Instead of lines and shapes, color names are written in areas of the canvas, and you fill them in with matching colored paper torn and cut from a large library of books, magazines and scraps.

Artists interested in a studio can reach Katherine Horst at (717) 419-4025.
