Good morning, Lancaster County. The mid-80s are here this week, and so is something we only get for about ten days a year - 150 cherry trees in full bloom along the Marietta riverfront, and they're out there right now, free to anyone who takes a drive down Front Street.
Pull up a chair, because today's edition has the full story on that plus a packed week of live music, history talks, wildflower hikes, and dinner theater.
In today's Lancaster Local:
The cherry blossoms are at peak bloom in Marietta right now - and their origin story is better than you'd expect
Restaurant Week and the Best Kept Secrets Tour are both happening today across the county
Thursday brings Netflix wildlife filmmakers, live Americana, and a jazz-and-river-conservation fundraiser
A guided wildflower hike, trivia night, and Mahjong at a music venue round out the week
FEATURED LANCASTER COUNTY NEWS
Lancaster County's own cherry blossom moment - and you don't have to drive to D.C.
Right now, this week, approximately 150 Kwanzan cherry trees are at peak bloom along East Front Street in Marietta - the same variety planted along the Tidal Basin in Washington. And the story of how they got there is genuinely one of the best pieces of Lancaster County lore you'll read all year.
It starts in the early 1990s with a man named James Sagris - a ceramics restoration artist who had done work for the White House and the State Department. He moved to Marietta, planted cherry trees in his front yard, and when neighbors started asking where they could get their own, a community beautification project was born. The grassy railroad bank where the trees now stand is owned by Norfolk Southern; the Marietta Area Business Association has leased and maintained it with volunteer help since the late '90s.
The result is a roughly half-mile stretch of pink that stops cyclists mid-ride. There's actually a great anecdote floating around: a D.C. rider told his riding partner from Lititz about the cherry blossoms in Lititz's own backyard.
You can walk or bike Front Street any day this week to see them for free. And if you want the full celebration, the 4th Annual Cherry Blossom Benefit Music Festival is this Saturday, April 18 - four live music stages, 49 artisan vendors, 14 food trucks, free admission, and alpacas. But don't wait for Saturday. The blossoms don't check the calendar.
Bonus: Nissin Foods off Route 30 also has more than 80 cherry trees on site, planted by the company founder's wife to bring Japanese culture and heritage to Lancaster County. Two cherry blossom spots. One county.
