FEATURED LANCASTER COUNTY HEALTH STORY A cancer prevention vaccine - and it may be coming to a clinic near you
For decades, a cancer vaccine has sounded like science fiction. Now it's a clinical trial - and it's coming to Central Pennsylvania.
UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh have announced the expansion of a first-of-its-kind breast cancer prevention vaccine trial to Central Pennsylvania, opening access through UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.
The trial is specifically designed for post-menopausal women age 50 and older who have been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) - a Stage 0 precancerous condition.
DCIS is one of the most common early-stage diagnoses, and researchers are racing to understand whether a vaccine intervention at this stage could stop breast cancer from ever fully developing.
Participants in the vaccine arm of the trial receive three doses of the vaccine before their standard surgical treatment.
While still in clinical trial phase, the research represents one of the most hopeful frontiers in breast cancer care - and the expansion to Central Pennsylvania means that Lancaster County residents and surrounding communities now have a path to participate without traveling to Pittsburgh.
If you or someone you know has received a DCIS diagnosis, this trial may be worth a conversation with an oncologist.
Monday, June 1 - Sunshine and mid-70s to welcome the first day of June, with zero chance of rain. Get outside, Lancaster - it's as good as it gets.
Thanks for reading Lancaster Local. We hope this week gives you something to look forward to every single day - because it really does. If you found something useful, forward it to someone who still gets their news from a Facebook group.
