They told Tim Deeg the fire department was honoring his grandson… But the honest truth is even better.
When the Columbia Borough Fire Department called Elwood "Tim" Deeg down to the station on May 4, they said it was to recognize his grandson. That was the cover story. When the 83-year-old walked in, his whole family was waiting, and the honor was his: grand marshal of Columbia's first firefighters parade in years, the centerpiece of the borough's 300th birthday celebration.
Few people have earned it like Deeg. He joined Columbia's fire company at 18 and never really left - 19 years as chief, the founder of a junior firefighting program that's still training kids today, and a living archive of stories that range from the Three Mile Island scramble of 1979 to the day his company found a rail car in town loaded with napalm. Decades into retirement, he still keeps track of the borough's fires. "I still have it in my heart," he says.
And his ride for the parade? A 1917 American LaFrance fire engine, out of service since 1958, that the department brought back to drivable life with neighbors' GoFundMe dollars.
