Five lab rats clocked out at Millersville - and went home as somebody's pets

Here's a happy ending you don't see coming. At Millersville University, five Long-Evans rats wrapped up their working lives as subjects in an advanced psychology lab - and instead of the usual fate for research animals, every one of them got adopted into a forever home.

The five-month-old females spent the semester in a behavioral study on positive reinforcement, looked after by 11 students who ran the lab hands-on instead of sitting through exams. Associate professor Dr. Kelly Banna says rats are "VERY social creatures," so the department went all-in this year - a new, big, enriched cage to keep the group housed and comfortable through the term. By the time the study wrapped, the rats were friendly, active, and used to company.

That's where the neighbors come in.

Adopters stepped up ready to care for the animals for up to three years, and because rats do best with a buddy, they took them home in pairs and trios - no rat left to retire alone. Five little subjects, five soft landings, one psychology department that clearly got attached.
