The bookstores that pay for the library.
There is no new business opening in the county this week that I could source properly, and no milestone I could confirm.
So today is about something quieter that runs all year.
The Lancaster Public Library Friends Group operates two bookstores, and in their words they are "operated solely by volunteers."
The Marshall Street Bookstore sits at 225 N. Marshall Street, on the corner of Marshall and Fulton.
It's open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Sundays and federal holidays.
Their own listing warns the posted hours may occasionally differ, due to last-minute schedule changes.
What they sell, in their words: "quality used books for all ages at extremely reasonable prices."
The Juliana Bookstore is inside the Lancaster City Branch at 151 N. Queen Street, also Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — plus, as they put it, additional hours by chance.
At the same Marshall Street address there's also the Book ReSort — not a third store, but the donation end of the operation.
It's open most Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to noon, and that's where volunteers take donations — books, DVDs, puzzles and board games, CDs, vinyl records.
The reason all of this exists is stated plainly on their own page.
Proceeds from the stores go directly to Lancaster Public Library and its patrons, "helping to close the gap in public funding."
That is a carefully worded sentence, and it is doing a lot of work.
Here's the part to put on your calendar.
Next weekend the Book ReSort holds its Fall ReSort Book Sale — Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, September 27, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 225 N. Marshall Street.
Thousands of items: books, DVDs, audiobooks, vinyl.
They're flagging a large selection of audiobooks on CD this year, and a run of Great Courses on CD and DVD.
They say over half the items are priced between 50 cents and $2, and parking is free.
The Marshall Street Bookstore stays open during the sale.
And the tip they volunteer themselves: Sunday is half-price day.
Two bits of admin from their own notice.
They take cash, checks and major cards, but they cannot accept bills over $20 — they cite an increase in counterfeit currency.
And 6 percent Pennsylvania sales tax is charged unless you provide a tax-exempt number.
So if you have been meaning to clear a shelf, the donation door is open Mondays and Wednesdays.
And if you'd rather fill one, next Sunday afternoon is when the same books get cheapest.

🍲 Whip It Up Cookbook Club — Ephrata Public Library, 550 South Reading Road, Ephrata.
Monday, September 21, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Ages 18+.
One cookbook a month, and they talk about the chefs, the ingredients and the culture behind it.
This month's cookbook and the sign-up list are behind the circulation desk.
Registration closes at 5:45.
🍎 Cider Making with Lancaster County Parks and Rec — Environmental Education Center, One Nature's Way, Lancaster.
Tuesday, September 22, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Park naturalist Lisa Sanchez on the history of the apple tree, then everyone presses fresh cider on an old-fashioned press and drinks it.
Apples provided.
Check the address twice. You register through Columbia Public Library and the listing shows Columbia's address, but the program happens in a field at the Environmental Education Center.
It's outdoors, so dress for it.
Everyone signs a liability waiver, and each family member registers separately — under-twos excepted.
Registration closes at 10:15.
