COMMUNITY NEWS
For the nation's 250th, one of Lancaster's oldest houses is throwing the party.
If you want to mark the Fourth with something other than fireworks, Historic Rock Ford has spent this week opening its gates — free — for a two-day "Celebrate America250" gathering at the 1794 mansion that was home to General Edward Hand, the Revolutionary War officer who served as George Washington's adjutant general.
The celebration runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, the second of its two days, on the grounds along the Conestoga where Hand lived after the war. Rock Ford has leaned into the country's 250th all year — lectures, living history, even a staging of the musical "1776" on the lawn — and this weekend is its big open-house moment.
It's a quieter kind of Fourth: no grandstand, no admission, just a walk through a house that was already standing when the country was born, in the summer it turns 250.

Weather
Friday, July 3 — Still scorching at 101 and mostly sunny, with maybe a stray late-day storm. The bigger question is the Fourth itself: Saturday looks hot (99) with a genuine chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms — right when the fireworks are set to fly. Nothing's called off yet, but check your show's page before you head out, and note those rain dates.
